This wearable breastplate by blog author Christine Palamidessi is mostly inspired by the exhibit “Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion” that was at the Peabody Essex Museum ( Salem, MA) last winter….especially the strapped clothing by Japanese designers Tao Kurihara and Rei Kawakubo. Of course in addition to Japanese art, there is more homage being paid —-1 cotton strapping is Iyengar Yoga straps straight from Pune, India ..2. The sculpture itself hearkens back to the Greeks and Romans ideals.
What inspires me? Being human. I build sculptures that echo old things, re-mythologizing and re-consecrating the subjects, mostly figurative. Life moves so fast and we are all starving for human experience and relationships. Art is a way to stop an look around, both for the maker and the viewer.
