According to Greek myth, the universe as we know it came to life through an act of violence. It began with Gaia and Uranus: the two merged completely, point to point, touching unceasingly. One day their son Cronus sneaked out of the deep bowels of his mother. He cut off his father’s testicles with a wire hook. Uranus, bleeding and in shock, pulled away from Gaia, creating the vault of heaven. The fierce, abrupt separation allowed time and space to exist, and also history. Existential questions. Movement. The first conflict.
Uranus’ blood and testicles seeded Aphrodite (love); and the Furies (hatred, revenge, discord.)
